Nearly 90,000 Brevard County residents still in the dark after Hurricane Irma

COCOA, Fla. — Despite the fact that crews are working constantly, nearly a third of Brevard County residents remained without power Thursday due to damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

The problem has caused issues among some of the residents.

On Thursday, Andrew Grubbs' air conditioner finally came back on after power crews rolled through the neighborhood.

But his neighbor across the street, Kenneth Powell, wasn't so lucky.

“He’s been sitting on the porch all day,” Grubbs said.

Powell left no question as to how he felt about going so long without power.

“It’s aggravating,” he said. “Real aggravating.”

In the meantime, crews repairing the Cocoa water system continued to make progress on restoring service in the city.

Most of the city’s customers, including those on the barrier islands, have running water.

Police have been out in force as the electricity remained off for large parts of the city.

They were trying to dissuade looters in areas where the power was out and keeping an eye on intersections where the traffic lights had gone dark, to make sure drivers were safe.

“It’s been days, and people are getting weary,” Cocoa Police Department spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said. “And it’s hard, because you have some signals that work, some signals that don’t work and you’ve got to pay attention.”
