VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — For nine months, police have been investigating a rash of burglaries in Pelican Bay that have left area residents missing tens of thousands of dollars' worth of property.
Daytona Beach police have released photos of two women they believe are involved in at least 10 burglaries. The Pelican Bay community is offering a $1,000 reward for information on the pair, believed to be in their 40s or 50s.
The Daytona Beach Police Department has offered a $1,000 reward as well.
Investigators believe the women pose as average residents, taking a walk in the community. Instead, they are casing potential targets.
“They’re entering secured residences through the back door,” Daytona Beach Police Sgt. James Chirco said. “It’s all forced entry, either through sliding glass doors or French doors.
It’s usually in the morning hours or early afternoon.”
Last month, one couple reported $40,000 in Rolex watches and jewelry stolen from their Elder Court home.
All of Pelican Bay’s entrances are gated, and investigators are not sure how the women are able to gain access to the community.
Police have also identified a silver Hyundai SUV they believe is connected to the pair of suspects.
Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and contact police if they see anything suspicious.
“If anybody sees somebody unfamiliar walking through, a vehicle they’ve never seen before moving slowly, checking out the neighborhood, looking at houses left and right, please notify us immediately,” Chirco said.
