AdventHealth doctor says it could be weeks before omicron cases peak in Central Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — As COVID-19 cases continue to surge, AdventHealth gave an update on how the omicron variant is impacting the health care system and community.

Dr. Vincent Hsu, AdventHealth’s executive director of infection prevention, said he doesn’t believe Central Florida has hit its peak with omicron cases. He said he thinks we could hit the peak by mid-January.

According to AdventHealth, there are 630 people hospitalized with COVID-19 across Central Florida. Hsu said this is less than half of what we saw in August 2021.

There are also not as many cases in the intensive care unit.

Even though omicron is mild, Hsu said it can still cause hospitalizations.

AdventHealth said it is seeing a difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. There is still serious illness among those who are not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Hsu said there is also a greater number of children being hospitalized with COVID-19.

AdventHealth doctors recommend that children keep a mask on while in school to prevent illness.
