MELBOURNE, Fla.,None — The Brevard Zoo has welcomed its first baby Giant Anteater to the zoo. The baby was born on Jan. 26 to mother Boo and father Abner. The anteater family is adjusting to the new baby, so the anteaters are not yet on display. Zoo officials will notify the public when the anteaters go back out on exhibit. The sex of Brevard Zoo’s baby Giant Anteater is currently unknown.
Giant anteaters are usually solitary mammals in the wild that come together to mate. An adult female giant anteater gives birth to just one baby. The baby, called a pup, hitches a ride on its mother’s back for the first year of life. Pups are born with a full coat of hair; similar coloring helps the baby blend in so predators can't see it.
Both Boo and Abner came from the Palm Beach Zoo in Florida. Boo arrived last March and is 10 years old. Abner came to Brevard Zoo in 2008 and is eight years old.
