Deputies: DeLand man struck, killed, while drinking in roadway

DELAND, Fla. — Deputies said a DeLand man was struck by a car and killed Friday night when he walked in the middle of the road and stopped to take a sip of beer.

They said the 57-year-old man, who was believed to be intoxicated, walked westbound from the Sunoco gas station on Woodland Boulevard and crossed over the concrete median.

He then walked into the southbound lane and began drinking a beer, according to deputies.

They said he was then struck by a South Carolina man driving a Chevy Tahoe.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, died at the scene.

The crash is under investigation and no charges have been fired.
