FHP trooper hurt in crash while escorting body of fellow trooper

OCALA, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was injured Monday while escorting the family of a trooper who was killed over the weekend to the funeral home.

Trooper Chelsea Richard, 30, died this weekend when she was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 75 in Ocala.

On Monday, a trooper was escorting Richard's family to the funeral home when the patrol car was struck by another vehicle near the intersection of US-27 and County Road 466 in Lady Lake.

The trooper suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

Authorities said Richard was finishing up a two-car crash investigation on I-75 when a pickup truck veered off the road and struck her patrol car, killing her, and two others.

Richard leaves behind a 4-year-old son, a father in New York, and a mother in Charlotte County.
