ORLANDO, Fla. — Day three of testimony has concluded in Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Loyd in the fatal shooting of Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. At the time, Loyd was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. He was sentenced to life in prison for Dixon’s murder.
The prosecution has wrapped its case and testimony has concluded for the day.
The judge said she has a number of legal issues she need to address related to the case, so she will take the afternoon to go over those and give the jury a chance to relax.
The defense is set to begin calling witnesses on Friday.
The judge also brought up the fact that a juror in the case asked three deputies a question about their gun belts. She said two declined to answer, and one told the juror it weighs roughly 30 pounds.
The state recommended bringing the juror in to question her on the intent of her questioning and remind her that only information presented in the courtroom is to go into her decision making. The defense said they are not concerned about the question. The judge said she will decide how to handle the situation on Friday morning.
The judge said the trial is on schedule to go to verdict on Tuesday.
11 a.m. update
The state calls Richard Reuth to the stand. Reuth worked as a crime laboratory analyst for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in January 2017 when Clayton was shot and killed. He is examining the guns involved in the case.
