Hateful graffiti sprayed on historic church in Oviedo

OVIEDO, Fla. — Detectives in Seminole County are investigating a disturbing act of vandalism in Oviedo.

Deputies were called to what had been the Saint James AME Church near James Drive on Saturday.

The location was converted to a museum a few years ago.

Residents said they recently discovered hateful graffiti on the side of the building.

Local historian Judith Smith spoke out about the incident saying, “Our moral compass has declined. If you do not have a moral compass, you’re going to have all kinds of behavior like this.”

Deputies have since painted over the graffiti at the church.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.
