TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Millions of dollars in unclaimed property are available for thousands of Floridians.
That is why Florida’s chief financial officer Jimmy Patronis wants to spread the word and help people recover cash that they might not even know about.

According to the CFO, 1 in 5 Floridians has unclaimed funds from a forgotten financial account.
The Division of Unclaimed Property currently holds more than $3 million in unclaimed property.

According to the state, most unclaimed money comes from dormant bank accounts, unclaimed insurance proceeds, uncashed checks, deposits, and abandoned safe deposit boxes.
The property is usually held in the State School Trust Fund and used to support public schools for five years.

The CFO said more than $1.7 billion in unclaimed property have been returned to Floridians since 2017.
