Parents reunited with Jewish Academy students after bomb threat

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Parents of students at the Jewish Academy of Orlando were reunited with their children at Lake Sybelia Elementary after the academy received a bomb threat just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Several hundred children and staff members from the school, located on North Maitland Avenue, walked about 10 minutes to Lake Sybelia Elementary.

Maitland police responded to the academy after the school reported receiving a bomb threat from a man who said he wanted to hurt as many children as possible.

The school official who reported the threat said the man’s voice sounded robotic, like he was using a device to disguise his voice, police said. A bomb-sniffing dog from the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office was brought in to sweep the school buildings for explosive material.

Along with the school, the nearby Jewish Community Center was also evacuated.

Authorities told parents who were unable to pick up their children early that the children would be able to stay at Lake Sybelia Elementary for the day.

An investigation into the threat is ongoing.
