Medical field prepares for potential UPS strike

ORLANDO, Fla. — Time is running out to nail down a new contract for UPS workers and avoid a potential strike.

In less than a week, the current agreement will expire.

Unionized workers have been holding rallies across the country since negotiations broke down earlier this month. They’re demanding better pay and improved working conditions.

A strike could disrupt critical deliveries including medical supplies, and some in the medical field are preparing.

“They bring in everything from bandages to surgical equipment,” Dr. Rajiv Bahl said.

However, the clock is ticking.

“We aren’t necessarily making dramatic measures to really take care of that problem that is yet to come,” Bahl said. “However, if it starts to get into the throes of it, and we’re starting to see months and months of strike, and we don’t have large supplies of it, I think the hospital systems around Central Florida and across the country are going to start preparing a lot more.”

Bahl said they also have to prepare for an influx of patients not getting what they need in the mail.

“Patients rely upon medical supplies, sometimes at their front doorstep, and sometimes even in a doctor’s office,” he said. “Now, when you can’t get a hold of those things, where do many people turn? they turn to my office.”

Bahl said patients should make sure they have enough on hand, but don’t stockpile.

“When you need supplies, you should have plenty of it on hand, as long as your prescription and your primary doctor approve of it as well,” he said. “What (stockpiling) does, it takes away from other people who could use it as well.”
