ST. CLOUD, Fla.,None — The monkey that was captured in St. Cloud on Wednesday night has died.
Officials said the monkey seemed fine Wednesday night, but then suddenly became lethargic and died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at Osceola County Animal Control.
Officials said the cause of death will not be determined until a necropsy is performed.
The 30-pound monkey, believed to be of the Rhesus species, experienced a fall of approximately 60 to 100 feet after being tranquilized in the tree canopy Wednesday night and captured by animal control, according to officials.
“This is very unfortunate and sad. It was our goal to trap him and have him relocated to a setting that would be both safe for him and the community,” said Animal Control Director Lee Radebaugh in a e-mail statement.
The monkey had been sighted in several areas in St. Cloud on Wednesday. There were no markings of ownership on the monkey and officials said they have not received reports of a lost or stolen monkey.
