VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the deaths of 101 vultures at Blue Spring State Park. Reports from January also identified 17 sick vultures at the park.
Wildlife officials collected bird samples to find the cause of death and sent them to the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, with results taking about a month.
As of early March, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has not identified the exact cause of the vulture deaths.
The FWC has an Avian Mortality Reporting App enabling the public to monitor wild bird health. A recent update simplifies reporting for residents who find dead birds.
Each year, state biologists investigate reports to track the spread of diseases like Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza, West Nile Virus, and Avian Pox.
