Arrest made in hit-and-run crash that killed 13-year-old boy, troopers say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An arrest was made in the case of a December hit-and-run crash that killed a 13-year-old boy, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jared Ryan Prochazka, 23, of Orlando was arrested Sunday on charges of leaving the scene involving death and vehicular homicide.

Gabriel Ortiz was riding his bike to a sleepover with a friend when he was hit and killed by a pickup truck on Montello Drive near North Econlockhatchee Trail in the Arbor Ridge West subdivision near State Road 417 and Econ Trail.

Troopers said the front of the pickup truck hit the boy and after the crash, troopers said the pickup’s driver ran over the bicyclist.

The pickup truck continued westbound without stopping, troopers said.

According to troopers, Orange County deputies located the pickup one mile from the crash scene.

The father of the surviving teen told Channel 9 that his son’s friend was thrown from the bike the length of three homes upon impact.

Neighbors said speeding is a problem on those residential streets.
