Orlando leaders to vote on plans to improve safety in downtown nightclubs

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando city leaders are scheduled to vote Monday on two proposals meant to keep visitors safer when they are in downtown Orlando.

One of the votes would put a moratorium into place that would stop new nightclubs from opening for at least six months.

City officials are also considering requiring a permit to serve alcohol after midnight.

It would require businesses that hold more than 50 people to hire off-duty officers.

That permit would also require walk-through metal detectors, ID scanners, and licensed security personnel at each entry point.

The city does have funds available to help cover some of the costs of additional security equipment.

However, some bar owners say the cost of hiring extra employees could put them out of business.

If the proposals move forward, a second vote by city leaders later would put them into action.
