OUC plans to resume normal billing, shutoffs for nonpayment next week

ORLANDO, Fla. — There is push to stop Orlando Utilities Commission from shutting off water and power for customers who haven’t paid their bills.

With many families still struggling because of the pandemic, a group of organizers wrote a letter to Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer asking him to continue giving relief to OUC customers.

As it stands now, OUC plans to resume normal billing and shutoffs for nonpayment next week, but both the mayor and OUC said there won’t be mass disconnections.

OUC said anyone concerned about getting their power or water shut off should call to see if there is a program or a plan they have that can help.

OUC said here are about 15,000 customers who are eligible to be shut off, but it will likely not shut down more than 2,500 the first week.

Another big company in Orange County, Duke Energy, is still not disconnecting for nonpayment.

It said it will do a phased-in approach when it resumes disconnections.
