ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Mothers and their babies will receive a warm welcome Wednesday at area hospitals at Florida Hospital for Women.
Thousands of red baby caps that were knitted by local volunteers will be donated to newborns.
The red baby caps were made to raise awareness for congenital heart defects.
Every year, 40,000 babies in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect, according to Florida Hospital.
The American Heart Association's "Little Hats, Big Hearts" program raises awareness for congenital heart defect, the country's most common birth defect. The program encourages volunteers to knit and crochet red baby caps.
February is American Heart Month.
