BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A woman who is the ex-wife of a former local mayor and accused of murdering a long-time friend is standing trial in Brevard County.
Investigators believe Sheila Graham-Trott killed Kelly Brennan in a crime of passion because Brennan was having an affair with Graham-Trott’s husband, former Indialantic mayor Daniel Trott.
The defense said Graham-Trott didn’t want her husband back and had asked him to leave, but investigators said she felt her former friend was interfering with her divorce.
Brennan’s body was discovered in the undergrowth off A1A near Mark’s Landing in Melbourne Beach in 2010.
In opening statements Friday, prosecutors said Graham-Trott and Brennan had been friends for nearly 20 years.
In February 2010, both of their marriages were in trouble.
The defendant was already in the process of getting a divorce.
Witnesses testified that Brennan and her friend’s then estranged husband started a relationship.
Prosecutors said in an effort to convince their mother it was all a nightmare, the defendant’s children brought the defendant to the area of Mark’s Landing where they discovered a body.
“The defendant began saying she had a dream that she may have hurt Kelly, that it happened at Mark’s Landing,” McMaster said.
Assistant State Attorney Jim McMaster said not knowing what to do, the children called their grandmother.
Graham-Trott’s defense team said the defendant made no admission.
Almost as soon as testimony began, public defender Tamara Meister began asking witnesses about the victim’s husband and his unwillingness to let her go.
In what appears to be their trial strategy, the defendant’s ex-husband was also asked quite a bit about the victim’s husband.
