Villages golf cart paths could soon get striping

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — Many residents in The Villages believe golf cart paths would be safer with striping on the paths, similar to the yellow and white stripes on streets, but others told Channel 9 it could make things worse.

Golf carts are many residents' primary mode of transportation in The Villages, and the golf cart paths are often as crowded as the streets. The idea is to add the lines and make them look more like streets, making the paths easier to see.

"It is a big deal," said one resident. "Older people want to be comfortable driving on the golf cart paths. They feel comfortable when they can see well at night and in bad weather."

In District 4, supervisors have already added striping. But opponents said if the striping is added to all of the paths, they could become more dangerous for walkers and those riding bikes, arguing golf cart drivers would think they own the path.

District 4 supervisor Don Deakin told Channel 9 that since they added the striping, the paths in his district have become safer and people are driving slower.

Supervisors in other districts also think it's time for some action.

Villages leaders have been meeting to discuss the issue. Right now, they're looking at adding signs to obstruction on paths and adding striping on the edges. They hope they can get everyone on the same page and add the stripes in the next few weeks.
