Villages residents forced to play chicken on golf carts at dangerous intersection

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A dangerous intersection popular with golf carts is making drivers take pause at The Villages.

The intersection of Colony Boulevard and the golf cart path is dangerous, even with traffic being directed by police.

Some drivers are confused about when it's their turn.

Cars had the right of way through the main artery and the golf carts had been backing up farther and farther behind stop signs on both sides of Colony because of the new development in the area.

Impatient golf cart drivers started playing chicken more and more often to get across.

For now, they're taking turns getting through at the direction of a few new hired hands.

The Villages started manning this intersection every day about a week ago Friday, after several accidents revved up drivers' concerns and complaints.

Villages resident Larry Boman said it's on everyone's minds.

"Design failure at The Villages," Boman said.

"You go to the pools, you go to restaurants, this is what you hear people talking about… this intersection," Boman said.

"People are trying to cross the road and people in cars and everyone's in a hurry...Gotta go play," resident Terry Brady said.

This is working out great I think they should keep the guys (traffic directors)... In the long run I think it's cheaper," a Villages resident said.
