Timeline: Kobe Bryant remembered as ‘true renaissance man’ during memorial service for him, daughter

LOS ANGELES — A memorial for NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant was held Monday afternoon at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Bryant and Gianna were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, Jan. 26.

About 20,000 people were in attendance.

3:15 p.m. update

Former teammate Shaquille O’Neal called Kobe Bryant a “loyal friend and true renaissance man.”

“Kobe and I pushed each other to play some of the greatest basketball of all time,” he said.

3:05 p.m. update

NBA legend Michael Jordan said Kobe Bryant was “like a little brother,” and he was very emotional as he spoke during the service.

“In the game of basketball, in life and as a parent, Kobe left nothing in the tank,” Jordan said with tears streaming down his face. “He left it all on the floor.”

It’s wasn’t all sadness, however, The crowd erupted into laughter when Jordan said he’s going to have to look at “another crying meme” of himself for the next three or four years.

2:35 p.m. update

Rob Pelinka, general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, said he had known Kobe Bryant for 20 years.

He said he was Bryant’s former agent and his best friend and that the two communicated daily.

Pelinka said Bryant had sent him text messages from the helicopter before the crash.

“Kobe lived to make others’ lives better -- all the way up to his final text,” he said.

2:15 p.m. update

WNBA player Diana Taurasi is sharing about Kobe Bryant, whom she said she had admired since childhood.

Taurasi said Bryant was her mentor.


2 p.m. update

Vanessa Bryant, Bryant’s widow, is sharing about her memories of her late husband.

Bryant said she was unable to see her husband as a celebrity or an incredible athlete -- to her, he was a loving husband and father first.

“God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each other. He had to bring them home to Heaven together,” she said. “I love you both, and I’ll miss you forever and always."


1:50 p.m. update

Vanessa Bryant, Bryant’s widow, is sharing about her memories of her late daughter Gianna Bryant.

Bryant said her daughter had dreamed of playing for the WNBA and would have changed sports.


1:45 p.m. update

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter opened the memorial service with a performance of “XO” and “Halo.”

Jimmy Kimmel then shared about his memories of Kobe Bryant before introducing Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant.


1:30 p.m. update

The service was scheduled for Feb. 24 because Bryant wore a No. 24 jersey while playing for the Lakers and because his daughter wore a No. 2 jersey for her basketball team.

Proceeds from ticket sales of the memorial service will go toward the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation, which aims to “further Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s legacy through charitable endeavors in sports,” the organization’s website said.
