New documents offer first-hand account of when Omar Mateen was shot

ORLANDO, Fla. — New documents give a first-hand account of the officer-involved shooting that took out mass shooter Omar Mateen at Pulse nightclub.

The documents explain the moments officers fired on the shooter.

While hostages were running to safety, just-released documents provide more details about the moments Mateen emerged from Pulse and was shot by police on June 12.

The self-proclaimed ISIS sympathizer held club-goers hostage inside a bathroom for nearly three hours.

That’s when one deputy was quoted in the documents saying, “Orlando SWAT members called out there would be a controlled detonation and to seek cover. There would be a large number of hostages and help was needed gaining control of them.”

That detonation led to the use of a Bearcat to blast a hole in the side of Pulse, freeing hostages and forcing out Mateen simultaneously.

And that’s when more shots were fired.

A deputy wrote, “All I saw concerning the officer-involved shooting was the muzzle blasts from the unknown Orlando police SWAT members pointed in the direction of the west wall of Pulse. I did not see the suspect. I could not tell who fired first.”

Also in the documents, deputies wrote, “Throughout the incident, I witnessed exceptional heroism in the face of indescribable horror.”

Even though officers from all across Central Florida came to the scene and have accounts about what they say and did, the FBI is the lead agency.

They have not released any new details about the investigation
