WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio — A veteran suffering from PTSD will be allowed to keep his ducks, which he said are therapeutic to him.

Darin Welker was convicted in 2014 of a misdemeanor for violating a town ban on owning farm animals, according to the Coshocton Tribune. A state appeals court upheld his conviction, and the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal.

However, this week, the West Lafayette Village Council granted Welker's variance to the city ordinance banning farm animals, according to the Tribune.

"It's time to settle this and be done," council member Craig Bordenkircher told the Tribune. "Given the documentation, I say we grant him the variance."

Welker has six ducks and at one time had as many as 14.

He served in Iraq in the Army and has overcome physical pains. The ducks have helped Welker progress with his PTSD, his doctor said.
