SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Five waitresses at a New York restaurant received an early Christmas present on Saturday as a group of patrons left a $1,400 tip.
The waitresses at The Market Diner in Syracuse were the latest recipients of the Shock & Claus trend, where each person pays for their meal and adds a $100 tip.
Bud Loura, who organized the surprise, told WSYR-TV, said he has seen firsthand how hard waitresses work.

“I work with a lot of independent restaurants. I see the strife they’re going through. I see the hurt that’s going through their employees right now and it’s just really important,” Loura told the television station. “They’re the hardest-working people right now. I think the people that came and gave the $100 are just as happy as the people that got the money.
One of the waitresses, Kelly Beeching, was certainly happy, telling WSYR that she had never received such a large tip.
After the split, each waitress cleared $280.

“I was going to give a girl in the kitchen some,” Beeching told the television station. “She seems like she could use it. I probably will take $100 of it and give the rest to her.”
Loura said he is planning to continue the event year-round and wants to establish a breakfast club to surprise restaurant staffers once a month. Beeching likes the idea.
”Do a little bit for someone else because that was just so nice,” she told WSYR. “I can’t thank them enough, just to be a good person is so nice.”
