Wrong Will Smith: Twitter users flood podcaster’s account after Oscars slap

SAN FRANCISCO — If you think it’s tough being Will Smith this week, ask the guy who owns the @willsmith account on Twitter. He’s not the actor who slapped comedian Chris Rock during last weekend’s Academy Awards, but he has been taking some hits on his verified account.

The flap over the Oscars slap hit home for Will Smith -- a San Francisco podcaster, gamer and public relations agent for independent game studio Stray Bombay, Variety reported.

“Real talk, I’m not the person you’re upset/happy with,” the podcaster tweeted on March 27. “I make podcasts and video games for a living.

“At the risk of making people pissed off at me instead of that other guy, the world would be a better place if we stopped answering words with violence.”

The podcaster, who has had a Twitter account since 2007, posted a GIF of a flying bowl of petunias with the caption, “Oh no, not again.” That is a reference to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe,” Variety reported.

The actor does not have an official Twitter account.

On Friday, actor Will Smith, facing possible disciplinary action after he slapped Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In a statement, the actor called his actions “shocking, painful and inexcusable,” adding that he will accept any penalty that the Academy’s Board of Governors deems appropriate, Variety reported. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for April 18.

Rock, a presenter at the Academy Awards, was awarding an Oscar for best documentary feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He was confronted by Smith after the actor reacted negatively to the comedian’s “G.I. Jane 2″ joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, according to the AP. Smith walked onstage and appeared to strike Rock.

Pinkett Smith has a shaved head and suffers from alopecia, a hair-loss condition, according to the AP.

After returning to his seat in the audience, Smith shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth,” Variety reported.

The Will Smith from San Francisco is used to being confused with the actor, who won a best actor Oscar for his role in “King Richard.”

His personal website is notthatwillsmith.com, and his Twitter bio also points out that he is “notthatwillsmith.”

That did not stop people from tweeting at the podcaster moments after the actor slapped Rock.

“Bruh control ur anger issues,” one person tweeted.

Another Twitter user responded, “Bruh, learn to tweet the right person.”

“Give back your Oscar, CLOWN,” another Twitter user wrote, replying to the podcaster’s flying petunias GIF.

Even ESPN sports commentator Stephen A. Smith accidentally messaged podcaster Will Smith on Twitter, writing, “Please tell me I didn’t see what I just saw. Somebody please tell me that @willsmith was joking and it was part of the show when he just smacked @chrisrock on national television.”

“I’m begging y’all ... please don’t tell me @willsmith would do something like that???” Stephen Smith wrote.

George Papadopoulos -- a financial planner and not the former adviser to President Donald Trump, tweeted that he felt podcaster Will Smith’s pain.

“Dude, welcome to the club!” financial-planner Papadopoulos tweeted at San Francisco Will Smith, according to Variety.
