FHP: Bicyclist, 63, dies after being struck by deputy’s SUV in Marion County

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash near Ocala.

11 a.m. update:

FHP said the crash involved a marked Marion County Sheriff’s Office SUV and a bicyclist.

Investigators said the bicyclist was traveling east on the right lane of State Road 200.

The SUV, also traveling east along the same traffic lane, approached the cyclist from behind and ended up colliding with him, troopers said.

In a report, FHP stated that the area had no street lighting, the bicyclist was not wearing reflective clothing and his bike did not have any illumination devices attached to it.

The bicyclist, 63, of Gainesville, died at the crash scene, troopers said.

The MCSO deputy, 22, of Ocala, was not hurt.

Investigators did not release the name of either man.

State Road 200 was back open as of late Wednesday morning.

Troopers responded to SW Highway 200 at SW 80th Avenue shortly before 3:30 a.m.

Channel 9 has reached out to FHP for more information about the crash.

Meantime, Marion County Sheriff’s Office has advised the public to use caution as deputies assist with directing traffic in the area.

At last report, MCSO said all eastbound lanes of SW Highway 200 were closed near the crash site.
