PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a Pasco County judge today to order Meta to make sweeping changes to Facebook and Instagram, including banning Florida users younger than 14 and limiting teens’ use to two hours a day across its apps.
The request for a temporary injunction comes after Florida rejected an $18 billion settlement with Washington, D.C., and 48 other states.
Uthmeier described the deal as a “mere slap on the wrist” and chose to seek harsher penalties on his own.
Meta told parents Instagram and Facebook were safe. Its own research showed anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and predators in DMs. We just asked a Florida court to order Meta to turn off the features that addict teenagers and to leave Florida kids alone when they’re in school or sleeping. Meta tried to get us to take their low-ball settlement, but we wont sell out our kids.

The requested court order also includes strict limits on daily use of the application and communications. Adolescent usage would be capped at 2 hours per day across all Meta applications.
Additionally, Meta would be required to prohibit advertisements targeted at teenagers and to terminate direct messaging capabilities for teen users once they reach their daily usage limit.
