11-year-old neighborhood watch captain patrols Orlando by bike

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando boy is proving that age is nothing but a number when it comes to protecting your neighborhood from crime.

Zion Hayzill is only 11-years-old but he’s already sparked some changes to make people feel safer in their homes near South John Young Parkway and Orange Center Drive.

Zion often keeps his feet on his bike pedals and his eyes on his Orlando neighborhood.

He earned the title of block captain for his neighborhood watch as a sixth-grader.

“I sometimes get on my neighbors’ nerves by stopping in on them,” he said. “But you know, sometimes you have to go check in on the older people.”

City officials took notice of Zion’s efforts this week. He traded his bike for a bow tie as he received the Block Captain of the Year award for his district.
