ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida reported an additional 3,184 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.
That brings the total number of cases in the state since the pandemic began to 2,278,549.

The state also reported an additional 51 virus-related deaths.
That brings Florida’s total death toll from the virus to 36,598.

Of the latest deaths, 13 were reported in Central Florida.
The increase comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory committee on Wednesday voted in favor of recommending that the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech be given to people aged 12 to 15.

The vote came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted earlier this week to expand an emergency use authorization for the drug, including adolescents in that age range. Click here to read more.

The World Health Organization on Monday also reclassified a highly contagious COVID-19 variant sweeping India as a “variant of concern,” upgrading its status to that of a global health threat.
The triple-mutant variant, first detected in India and known as B.1.617, has proved to be far more easily transmissible than the original coronavirus strain and potentially evasive of vaccine protections, Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19, said during a news conference.
