TIMELINE: Opening statements conclude in Markeith Loyd murder trial

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial got underway on Monday afternoon.

5:45 p.m. update

After the jury left the courtroom on Monday, Markeith Loyd spoke out about grievances he had with the opening statements made in the trial so far.

He said he tried to turn himself in twice before Clayton was shot at Walmart.

“Walmart never had to happen,” Loyd said. “I tried to turn myself in two times before Walmart. I would never kill your queen like that. Never.”

5:30 p.m. update

Prosecutors and the defense both wrapped their opening statements on Monday. Testimony in the case is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Opening statements are underway in the murder trial of Markeith Loyd.

Prosecutors are talking through what happened the morning Clayton was killed in a Walmart parking lot.

Jury selection finished on Monday for Markeith Loyd’s second murder trial.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Loyd in the fatal shooting of Lt. Debra Clayton in 2017. At the time, Loyd was on the run for killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.

He was sentenced to life in prison for Dixon’s murder.

Jury selection lasted more than two weeks before 12 jurors and six alternates were chosen on Monday.

Jurors were told to pack a suitcase, because as soon as they were picked they were sequestered immediately.

Opening statements are set to begin Monday after 4 p.m.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
