Orlando begins $19 million project to modernize 80-year-old lift station

This essential infrastructure upgrade aims to prevent emergency outages and support downtown urban expansion

ORLANDO, Fla. — The City of Orlando has begun a $19 million project to upgrade an 80-year-old lift station. City leaders say the improvements will prevent future emergency outages and prepare downtown Orlando for sustainable growth.

Construction is currently underway on Garland Avenue near Marks Street and Orange Avenue. The project focuses on modernizing aging underground sewer infrastructure to support the city’s expanding population.

The construction requires road closures in the area. North Garland Avenue between Marks Street and Orange Avenue is closed while crews complete the upgrades.

Local resident Miller noted the necessity of the wastewater project despite the temporary disruption. “There’s literally sewage running across the trail. That kind of stuff, we need functional lift stations,” Miller said. “I know in the long run it’s good because there are fixing sewers under the roads.”

Construction is expected to finish in the summer of 2028.
