Groveland utility rate hike paused until January after water disruptions

Groveland city leaders paused a proposed utility rate hike until January of next year

Groveland faces frequent boil notices amid aging water infrastructure

GROVELAND, Fla. — A proposed utility rate hike in Groveland has been paused until January, following four utility disruptions over the past five weeks. The service interruptions triggered multiple boil water notices across affected areas.

City leaders have pointed to aging equipment and an outdated control system at the Sunshine Water Treatment Plant. Groveland recently secured nearly $8 million in loans and grants to upgrade its water system, though officials noted the work will take time to complete.

Residents have expressed opposition to paying higher rates for service they consider unreliable. Channel 9 previously reported on residents’ frustration with repeated boil water notices and rising rates. One affected Groveland resident detailed the ongoing impact on daily household life.

“It’s been horrible. If you live in that district, you never know when you go to turn on that faucet if you’re going to have water or not,” the resident said.

The utility rate hike will remain on hold until January while the city works on its water system updates.
