VIERA, Fla. — A 6-year-old student died Wednesday after a large video display board fell on the child at Riviera Elementary School, according to a statement from school officials.
Emergency responders were called to the campus at approximately 11:36 a.m. Staff members called 911 and immediately began lifesaving measures.
The child was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts. The student died despite those efforts, officials said.
“We are devastated by this unimaginable loss,” the statement read. “Our deepest condolences are with the student’s family, loved ones, classmates, and everyone in our school community who is grieving.”
Additional counseling and support services will be available to students and staff in the days ahead.
Officials said they would not release additional information about the student out of respect for the family’s privacy.
