Swimmer drowns in Lake Weir despite efforts from bystanders and jet skiers

The victim reportedly became exhausted while swimming before going beneath the surface of the lake

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A 22-year-old man died after drowning in Lake Weir near Gator Joe’s Beach Bar and Grill, according to Marion County law enforcement.

Deputies responded around 4:40 p.m. after reports of a swimmer in distress. Officials said the man became exhausted while swimming and went beneath the surface.

Bystanders and people on jet skis found him and brought him to shore. Marion County Fire Rescue crews provided emergency treatment and took him to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

“Our thoughts are with the friends, family and the bystanders who tried to save him,” officials said.
