MARION COUNTY, Fla. — One driver has been arrested and another is wanted after investigators said two BMWs were racing at high speeds before a crash that killed a 77-year-old woman in Marion County.
The crash happened around noon Aug. 8 at the intersection of Southwest 49th Avenue Road and Southwest 82nd Place Road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a black BMW driven by Cesar Ramon Estrada Garcia and a red BMW allegedly driven by Misaiah Mike Enriquez were traveling north on Southwest 49th Avenue Road.
Investigators said the vehicles were weaving through traffic and racing in a 45 mph zone.
BMW recorded traveling 105 mph
A Toyota RAV4 entered the intersection from Southwest 82nd Place Road as the BMWs approached.
The black BMW struck the left side of the RAV4. The red BMW avoided the collision and continued north, according to FHP.
Investigators later recovered data from the black BMW showing it reached 105 mph approximately three seconds before the crash.
A 77-year-old Ocala woman riding in the RAV4 died at the hospital. A 78-year-old male passenger suffered serious injuries, while the 48-year-old driver suffered minor injuries.
Driver surrenders to authorities
Estrada Garcia surrendered Friday morning at the Marion County Jail after an FHP investigator contacted him.
He faces charges of vehicular homicide, racing on a highway, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, reckless driving causing injury and reckless driving causing property damage.
According to the arrest report, Estrada Garcia initially denied racing but acknowledged that he had been driving recklessly.
Investigators said he later estimated his speed at between 60 and 70 mph and apologized for what he described as a “stupid decision.”
Second driver accused of fleeing and hiding car
FHP obtained an arrest warrant for Enriquez on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and fleeing a law enforcement officer at high speed.
Investigators said Ocala police spotted the red BMW driving recklessly near State Road 200 and Interstate 75 after the crash.
The warrant alleges Enriquez fled from an officer at speeds exceeding 120 mph and was last seen heading toward Sumter County.
Investigators said Enriquez arranged to have the BMW towed from behind a Subway restaurant on County Road 484 and taken to a garage in Marion Oaks.
FHP found the car inside the garage the following day and seized it after obtaining a search warrant.
A witness told investigators that Enriquez admitted he had been racing, saw a serious crash and left because he was scared, according to the warrant affidavit.
The charges and allegations contained in the arrest and warrant documents have not been proven in court.
