OneBlood urges immediate blood and platelet donations ahead of tropical system

Early donations will help offset potential collection disruptions and ensure hospitals remain well supplied

ORLANDO, Fla. — OneBlood is urging people to donate blood and platelets now as an approaching tropical system threatens to disrupt collections in parts of Florida.

All blood types are needed, with an increased need for O-negative, O-positive and platelet donations, the blood center said Wednesday.

OneBlood said donations made ahead of the storm can help offset collection disruptions and keep hospitals supplied before, during and after the system moves through.

“When a storm threatens our service area, blood collections can be impacted for several days. We are asking donors to step forward now,” said Susan Forbes, OneBlood’s senior vice president of corporate communications and public relations. “Every donation made today helps strengthen the blood supply and ensures we are ready to meet patient needs regardless of the weather.”

Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. To find a donor center or Big Red Bus blood drive, visit OneBlood.org.

“There is no substitute for blood. Patients in hospitals continue to need transfusions regardless of the weather,” Forbes said.
