NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Three people were rescued from Mosquito Lagoon near Oak Hill on Tuesday night after their fishing boat capsized, according to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
Crews were dispatched at 9:30 p.m. to reports of an overturned boat and people in the water. After navigating the waterway for about 30 minutes, the crews located the capsized fishing boat.
Rescuers found all three occupants wearing life jackets and holding onto the overturned vessel in the water.
The crew brought the three people aboard and took them safely to shore, where they were evaluated by emergency medical personnel. No injuries were reported, and none of the occupants required a hospital trip.
The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
Battalion Chief James Crapps credited the crew’s familiarity with the area and coordinated response for the successful rescue.
“[The crew’s] familiarity with the waterway, combined with the crew’s professionalism and teamwork, allowed Marine 50 to navigate safely through a difficult environment and execute a successful rescue,” Crapps said.
