New Listen Up Florida campaign warns of hearing loss risks

Listen Up Florida focuses on preventing hearing loss and encouraging residents to seek early care

Hearing loss

Fla. — A new statewide campaign is encouraging Floridians to take steps to protect their hearing and recognize the risks associated with untreated hearing loss.

The Florida Academy of Audiology, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology and WS Audiology launched Listen Up Florida to promote hearing-loss prevention, regular evaluations and early intervention.

Campaign organizers estimate that approximately 800,000 Floridians are living with hearing loss, although many may not recognize the importance of evaluation or treatment.

“Hearing loss is not just about missing sounds, it is about maintaining mobility, brain health, safety, and overall well-being,” said Dr. Laura Bradley Pratesi, vice president of communications for the Florida Academy of Audiology.

Pratesi said people with even mild hearing loss are three times more likely to experience a fall.

“Too many Floridians delay care because they are unaware of the importance of early intervention,” she said.

How to protect your hearing

Campaign organizers recommend three basic steps:

  • Avoid dangerously loud noise whenever possible.
  • Use earplugs or other hearing protection when loud sounds cannot be avoided.
  • Have your hearing checked regularly and whenever concerns arise.

“Hearing health is a significant and often overlooked public health issue,” said Dr. Jill Davis, president of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology. “At the same time, we are living in an increasingly noisy world.”

Power tools, loud music, sporting events, hunting, farming and manufacturing are among the activities that can expose people to potentially dangerous noise levels.

Audiologists say residents should use hearing protection during noisy activities and receive regular hearing checks to identify problems early.

More information about the campaign and hearing-health resources is available through the Florida Academy of Audiology.
